SDA Building nears completion

by Juan Miguel Lago - April 2005

A dream that remained one for years is finally going to be realized.

School of Design and Arts (SDA) building administrator Raul Dasmariñas shared that the 14-storey structure being constructed along Vito cruz Extension is due for completion on January 2006.

Setbacks, Dasmariñas stated, were inherent during the course of construction. He said that "as of now, we are delayed by 40 to 55 days." The causes he said, were the lack of construction materials and legal and unforseen holidays declared by the government.

"So from the previous delay of 30 days, it went up to 55 then down to 40." However, he is hopeful that the workers would catch up with the intended date of completion.

The building, which was designed by Mr. Ed Calma of Lor Calma and Associates, would house all the degree programs of the SDA.

"the building is about 40 percent complete," he said in Filipino. Dasmariñas also added that while the initial design was to have a classical building, the administration has done "many changes before they came up with the election of architects."

"The workers are currently working on the eight floor," Mr. Dasmariñas noted. "It will be topped of on May 2005." He explains that "topping off is the last floor to be built. [sic]"

He explained further that it only involves the exterior facade of the building, and that the interior shall be finished by 2006. He said the students can expect from the new SDA building newer, better and more facilities that can accomodate all the students' needs. "There will be top-of-the-line equipments."
